Real to Surreal - Week Three Drawing Task

Real To Surreal
Week Three Drawing Task

This week, the drawing task was to draw images or characters which relate to the theme of real to surreal. I decided to change the idea of what some simple objects are known for and have a play with some different characterisations that they could have.

I started off the week by drawing a character that is based off an alarm clock. Alarm clocks are known for being there to wake people up, so I drew him fast asleep. This isn't something that you would associate with an alarm clock so it was fun to step away from the typical stereotype.

I then thought about characterising a chair and how I can put a twist on this well know everyday object. I thought about how these are used by people everyday, which gave me the idea of a chair that is afraid of people. I tried to present this through the shaking legs, lowered eyebrows and dark shadowed outline of a person coming into a room.

For my next design, I looked at a toothbrush and thought about how this is also and everyday object and how it helps people, much like a superhero would. With this idea in mind, I designed a super toothbrush and tooth paste character to over exaggerate their helpfulness.

My last character design was based on a cactus. These are known for being sharp plants because of their spikes so they wouldn't work well with objects that could pop, such as a balloon. This then inspired the cactus balloon design because they are both two complete opposites which would never work together in real life which is why a cartoon version could work well as its something you would not expect.

Images Drawn Between the 2nd and 9th of October
